Chinch Bugs
When weather warms and becomes drier during late spring and early summer, apply Nitro Phos Bug Out granules to the lawn to prevent chinch bugs. Diatomaceous Earth or Safer Insecticidal Soap are organic alternatives. Applications of an insecticide around May 1, June 1, and possibly July 1 shoud stop them before the damage starts.

How do you know if you've had chinch bugs?

(1) Chinch bug damage appears in regular patches in your lawn.

(2) If everything in the infected area is dead, both the grass blades and the tube like runners they attach to, chinch bugs have killed the grass and the area must be treated. Re-sodding the lawn may be necessary in the infected areas.

Chinch bugs mostly feed on St. Augustine grass but occassionaly feed on other types of grasses. The chinch bug sucks out the plant juices through a needle like beak causing internal injury to the grass. During the summer eggs hatch in 10 days and the young develop into adults in as little as 3 weeks.
